Classic French Toast Recipe

French toast is a popular breakfast dish made by dipping slices of bread in a mixture of beaten eggs and milk (sometimes with added sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla) and then frying them until golden brown. The result is a warm, slightly crisp, and soft slice of bread with a custard-like interior.

French toast is often served with toppings such as powdered sugar, syrup, fresh fruit, whipped cream, or even savory ingredients like bacon or cheese. It’s believed to have originated as a way to use up stale bread, turning it into a tasty meal by soaking it in the egg mixture and cooking it.

Classic French Toast Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of bread (cut ¾ – 1 inch thick)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 50 ml milk
  • 15 g sugar
  • A few drops of vanilla essence
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon
  • Butter for the pan
  • Optional toppings: jam, jelly, butter, maple syrup, or honey

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Pan:
Place a non-stick skillet or pan over medium-low heat to warm up.
  2. Prepare the Egg Mixture:
In a large, shallow dish, whisk the eggs until smooth. Add the milk, sugar, vanilla essence, and ground cinnamon, then whisk well until all ingredients are fully combined.
  3. Grease the Pan:
Lightly coat the pan with butter or cooking oil, spreading it evenly across the surface.
  4. Dip the Bread:
Working quickly, dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for 2-3 seconds. Flip it to coat the other side for another 2-3 seconds. Repeat with the remaining slices.
  5. Cook the French Toast:
Place the soaked bread slices in the pan and cook until the underside turns golden brown (about 3 minutes). Flip the slices and cook the other side until golden brown as well (another 3-4 minutes). Depending on the size of your pan, you may cook 2 slices at a time.
  6. Serve:
Serve warm with your favorite toppings, such as jam, jelly, butter, maple syrup, or honey.
